Registrations for the Australian Trusted Trader (ATT) scheme are now open to all importers and exporters. The scheme has been designed by the DIPB to create closely aligned, strategic partnerships between the ABF (Australian Border Force) and international supply chain participants.
In order to obtain ATT status, importers and exporters must be able to demonstrate that they are 100 percent trustworthy in their international supply chain operations. Accreditation is gained by registering an interest in the scheme, going through a "gap analysis" in order to identify areas which may not yet be compliant, improve those areas accordingly, submit an application, and then go through an audit conducted by the ABF.
The benefits of the scheme, at this stage, are not that enticing. But it's the future projected benefits that are resulting in many importers signing up to become an ATT. The Customs and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 is currently before parliament relating to exemption from IPC (Import Processing Charges) for ATTs which is likely (but not definitely) to come into force from 1 July 2017. This benefit has the potential to save importers many thousands of dollars per year - approximately AUD 194 per bill of lading.
The process to become an ATT can take up to 12 months, so those wishing to participate are encourage to apply sooner rather than later. Tomax Logistics has registered to become an ATT (the scheme is open to brokers and freight forwarders as well), has completed the "gap analysis", and the application form. Tomax has also undertaken training to become a deliverer of the scheme and conduct the "gap analysis" on behalf of our clients.
